What is PT Night Out?
PT Night Out is a monthly gathering of the physical therapy community that brings people together to build relationships that transform society.
How did it get started?
PT Night Out has its roots in a project called Pub Night started by the Oregon Physical Therapy Association in March 2012. The first conversation occurred at Green Dragon Bistro and Pub in Portland, OR, in 2012 when 8 therapists gathered to talk about the possibilities of regular interactions among professionals. A date for the next conversation was set, and the monthly event was born. Learn more here.
Who is invited?
All PTs, PTAs, and students of PT and PTA are invited to attend PT Night Out. If you care about physical therapy, Night Out is for you.
Why do people come? What's in it for me?
“Networking” has been described as the top reason individuals are attracted to attend. The ears of Night Out leaders have picked up on new business opportunities sprouting, conversation about career advancement, and planning for individual follow-up meetings. Maybe the better question...what can't arise out of Night Out?
Why does Night Out 'work'?
Relationships create possibilities. It is through relationship that significant things happen. When people are in relationship, they can share, plan, dream, create and get things done. Without relationships, people are powerless. PT Night Out provides an opportunity for everyone in the physical therapy community to build on new and existing relationships to accomplish things they couldn't accomplish alone.
So is that where the tagline “Do More Together” comes from?
Yes! How savvy are you! The fact is we can do more together than any one of us could ever do alone. The tagline came about soon after the event’s creation and it has lasted the test of time. We make a little more progress toward getting big things done together in health care with every month
So what about my colleagues from other health professionals? Can I bring them to Night Out?
Yes! Transforming society is a very tall task, and we need all interested professionals to be part of the conversation. We welcome any health care practitioner who wants to come find out what Night Out is all about. In fact, they may already have a Night Out of their own! Oregon currently has Night Out events hosted by our colleagues in OT and SLP, also meeting on the Third Thursday of every month! Imagine what we could accomplish through a monthly “Health Care Night Out,” meeting the Third Thursday of every month, all across the nation. The seeds are there - and we are ready to grow.
So you meet every month? That's a lot of conversation!
Early attendees made it clear that Night Out fills a desire for professional connection that they have been seeking and unable to find anywhere else. Habits rule our lives, so knowing the Night Out is occurring every month seems to feel right. The average attendee makes it to a Night Out every 3 months or so, or 4 times a year. A monthly event with a regular day – “Third Thursday” in our case – allows life to occur while the progress continues.
Why “Third Thursday”?
Third Thursday was chosen based on the allure of a night out near the end of the work and school week for most attendees. The founding group also needed to avoid the other popular regular events that occur in Oregon on Thursdays, so they claimed the Third one. (Plus “Third Thursday” has a little ring to it, yes?)
I'm not much of a 'social butterfly'... What do introverts say about Night Out?
The popular book “An Introvert's Guide to Success in Business and Leadership” recognizes one-to-one conversation as the key to networking for introverts! Night Out allows the perfect forum to expand your connections through one-to-one conversation. We challenge you to attend and aim to talk with one new person – hear his or her story, and then share yours. Your career may be forever changed.
What are the mission, vision, and goals of PT Night Out?
Those three items are so crucial to the event that they deserve their own page: You can find them here.
This sounds great, but I don't have a conversation happening near me. How can I attend Night Out?
SO glad you asked because Night Out wants to come to you! You only need 2 people to get a Night Out started. All we need is a leader for your event...if that's YOU (or you and a colleague?), the Night Out leader team will help you get set up. It really is as easy as it seems. We also hope to host special event Nights around conferences & other special events to allow you to experience the power of one-to-one conversation for yourself. Please send us a message if you are interested in leadership opportunities!
I think I want to be a PT Night Out Leader. What does that involve?
That's great! There are many ways you can be a Night Out Leader, and we do need your help. Night Out aims to meet you where you are – for leaders that means getting involved for as little or as long as you'd like. The role of a Night Out Leader is very fluid; whatever your passion, there's a place for your talents. Reach out to a current Night Out Leader for more conversation about how you can get involved.
ALL of this sounds a little too good to be true. What's the catch?
The only 'catch' is that you might end up valuing the connections around you more than you expected. And once you experience the power of what can be accomplished through one-to-one conversation and relationship, you may not be able to go back!
I'm SO in! I want to attend PT Night Out soon - how do I stay in the loop?
First, mark your calendar for the Third Thursday every month – that part doesn't change. Then check out the event map and other resources at www.PTNightOut.org . Finally, check us out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/PTNightOut and on Twitter @PTNightOut for PT Night Out updates.
